Displays that refuse plain USB-C

Some monitors do not speak DisplayPort alt mode at all. The LG UltraFine 5K and Apple's Thunderbolt displays accept video only as a tunneled Thunderbolt or USB4 stream. Connect one with an ordinary full-featured USB-C cable, the kind that happily drives most 4K monitors, and the screen stays black.

Why these displays are different

The 5K-at-60 generation predates common DisplayPort links wide enough to carry it raw, so these panels take their video inside a Thunderbolt tunnel instead, historically as two joined DisplayPort streams. That design decision never left the product line. The consequence is strict: the whole chain must tunnel. A Thunderbolt or USB4 source port, and a cable that can carry a tunneled link.

How to spot one

The tell on the spec sheet is an input listed as "Thunderbolt 3" with no mention of DisplayPort alt mode. When our corpus records a display as tunnel-only, the bench refuses non-Thunderbolt sources outright and its minimum cable jumps to a certified Thunderbolt class; a 40 Gbps rating alone is not the requirement, the tunnel is. The safe purchase is the certified Thunderbolt 4 universal cable from the matrix.
